HAWA MAHAL
The Hawa Mahal Jaipur transcribed in English means the Palace of the Winds and this name is about the inventive cooling system which propagates gentle breezes through the inner rooms even during the harsh Rajasthan summers. This artistic design has been completely lost after a recent restoration in which windows were installed behind each of the lattice openings, so today the palace of winds has no wind.

Often referred to as the ‘Palace of Winds’, it was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 to expedite ladies of the royal household to enjoy cavalcades and perceive crowd in the below street without being noticed by the people. Red and pink sandstone was used for constructing this monument, and the unique five-storey exterior looks like the honeycomb of a beehive, which has infinite small windows (jharokhas) further embellished with latticework. Hawa Mahal is an aesthetic heritage exhibiting an idiosyncratic blend of Mughal and Rajput architectural style. One can make out the Rajput architectural style from its domed shaped baldachin, lotus and floral patterns, and fluted pillars while the Islamic style is seen in its arches and stone inlay filigree work. Hawa Mahal’s unique attraction is its 953 windows that cover the lace-like walls to allow royal ladies to watch the daily drama in the street below, without being noticed. it is interesting to note that in Hawa mahal there are no stairs to climb, though Hawa mahal is five-storey building. you have to enter from the side of the city palace as Hawa mahal doesn’t have a direct entrance.

The summer months are a bit hotter to visit this place. It is advisable to visit Hawa Mahal in the months of October to March as the weather is pleasant at this time. And morning hours can add on to your joy as the palace looks all the more beautiful with rays of sunshine falling on it.

You’ll come across plenty of shops selling the usual tourist fare, such as clothing and textiles, around the Hawa Mahal. However, they manage to be more costly than elsewhere, so bargain hard is best, if you decide to buy anything. Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar, and lesser-known Chandpole Bazaar are better areas to shop for inexpensive jewelry and craftsmanships.
